Puzzle difficulty done right

April 4, 2026 · Elena Kovář

Difficulty in puzzle games is a tightrope. Too easy and you stop caring; too obtuse and you quit in frustration. The great ones find the narrow strip in between where you feel smart, not tricked.

Tilecraft Quandary walks that line well. It introduces one new rule at a time — locked tiles, then color pairs, then rotating segments — so each fresh wrinkle feels learnable rather than dumped on you all at once.

My favorite sign of a well-made puzzle is putting the phone down convinced a level is broken, then solving it the next morning after a night's sleep. That's not the game being unfair; that's your brain needing a reset. It happened to me more than once here.

If you're evaluating a new puzzler, watch how it introduces mechanics and how it handles hints. Rules layered gently and hints offered but never forced are the marks of designers who trust you. Those are the ones worth your time.
